We talk to Patrick Laurie, author of Wainwright Prize 2020 shortlisted book Native, about the inspiration behind his writing and his call to action for us all.
Our guest:
Patrick Laurie was born and brought up near Dalbeattie – ‘the town of hard granite and warm hearts’. His blog Working for grouse was set up more than a decade ago as a diary of conservation in hill farming; it now attracts around 30,000 visitors each year. As well as writing and farming, he is involved in a number of conservation projects on upland farms across Scotland and the north of England. Unsurprisingly, Patrick lives in Galloway, Scotland.
Galloway is a place forgotten – a vague, half-imagined corner of Scotland that has fallen off the map. Patrick Laurie returns to his homeland, to establish a herd of native cattle on the hills above the Solway Firth and encounters the final passing of an ancient rural heritage.
