Rethinking and rebalancing our relationship with world around us.
In the aftermath of a pandemic which, for many of us, has fundamentally changed our relationship with nature, we talk to two people building on that capital: Dr Pavel Cenkl, Head of College at Schumacher College and Director of Learning, Dartington Trust and Trewin Restorick, Founder and CEO of Hubbub. We explore creative solutions to the climate crisis and how we can educate and influence behaviour in very different ways.
Our guests:
Pavel Cenkl has worked for more than two decades in higher education and has always been drawn to colleges and universities whose curriculum fully integrates learning with practice and thinking with embodiment.
Pavel has been Head of Schumacher College since 2019 and Director of Learning at Dartington since 2020. While helping to develop Dartington’s evolving curriculum, Pavel has been able to leverage expertise in ecologically-minded curriculum design and develop courses at the intersection of movement practice, ecological thinking, and environmental philosophy, Pavel is also a passionate endurance and adventure runner. Over the past five years through a project called Climate Run) Pavel has covered hundreds of miles in the Arctic and subarctic on foot in order to bring attention to the connections between our bodies and the more-than-human world in the face of a rapidly changing climate.
Pavel holds a Ph.D. in English and is the author of many articles, chapters, and two books: Nature and Culture in the Northern Forest: Region, Heritage, and Environment in the Rural Northeast. Iowa City: University of Iowa Press, 2010; and This Vast Book of Nature: Writing the Landscape of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, 1784-1911. Iowa City: University of Iowa Press, 2006. Most recently he has co-edited a book celebrating the 30th anniversary of Schumacher College with Satish Kumar, Transformative Learning: Reflections on 30 Years of Head, Heart, and Hands at Schumacher College. New Society Publishers, 2021.
He is currently working on a book titled Resilience in the North: Adventure, Endurance, and the Limits of the Human, which threads together personal narrative and observation with environmental philosophy and reflections on what it means to be human.
Trewin Restorick is Founder and CEO of the charity Hubbub UK www.hubbub.org.uk which transforms the way environmental messages are communicated by bringing people and organisations together as a force for good. In 2020, Hubbub won Charity of the Year and Trewin was recognised with a Leader of the Year award.
Trewin has a track-record of creating successful environmental enterprises including PaperRound a flourishing recycling business and Global Action Plan a long-established environmental charity. These enterprises were created built on experience gathered through roles he filled at Friends of the Earth where he was Director of Fundraising and at Plymouth City Council where he supported the creation of new social enterprises.
Trewin is a frequent media commentator on environmental issues and was trained by Al Gore as one of his climate change ambassadors. He is currently an environmental advisor to Tetra Pak, the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and the National Lottery Climate Fund.
